Definition

Shadow work is the practice of confronting and integrating the unconscious or repressed aspects of the self, often referred to as the "shadow." These are the parts of our psyche that we typically deny, avoid, or suppress, such as negative traits, past traumas, and unacknowledged desires. By bringing these hidden elements into conscious awareness, practitioners can heal, transform, and achieve greater self-awareness and spiritual growth.

The term "shadow" was popularized by psychologist Carl Jung, who believed that the shadow represents the parts of the personality that are not fully accepted or understood. In esoteric traditions, shadow work is an essential part of the spiritual journey, as it involves confronting the ego, dissolving illusions, and attaining higher consciousness.
