What Is a Right: The Principle of Freedom
In episode 21 we are discussing Rights. A right is a moral or legal entitlement that individuals possess, granting them the freedom or permission to do certain actions or enjoy specific privileges without interference or infringement by others. Rights are fundamental to human dignity and are often considered inherent to every individual, regardless of their race, gender, nationality, or other characteristics.

Martin Luther King Jr.
WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS?
A human right is a fundamental entitlement that belongs to every individual simply by virtue of being human. These rights are inherent to all human beings, regardless of their race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion, or any other characteristic. Human rights are considered universal, inalienable, and indivisible, meaning they apply to every person and cannot be taken away or separated from an individual.
Human rights encompass a wide range of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Some of the key human rights include:
Right to Life: The right to life is the most fundamental of all human rights, protecting individuals from arbitrary deprivation of life.
Right to Liberty and Security: This right ensures that no person can be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention and that everyone has the right to be free and secure.
Right to Freedom of Expression: The right to freely express opinions and ideas without fear of censorship or punishment.
Right to Education: The right to access education, enabling individuals to develop their potential and contribute to society.
Right to Health: The right to access healthcare and necessary medical services for physical and mental well-being.
Right to Freedom of Religion: The right to practice any religion or belief system without discrimination or coercion.
Right to Equality: The right to be treated with dignity and respect, free from discrimination based on race, gender, religion, or other characteristics.
Right to Work: The right to work in fair conditions, receive just wages, and join trade unions.
WHY ARE RIGHTS VIOLATED?
Human rights are unfortunately violated for various complex reasons, and the causes can vary depending on the specific context and circumstances. Some common factors that contribute to human rights violations include:
Lack of Respect for the Rule of Law: In some regions, weak or corrupt governance structures, and a lack of enforcement of laws can lead to human rights abuses. When authorities fail to uphold the rule of law or when laws themselves are discriminatory, it creates an environment where human rights violations can occur without accountability.
Political Instability and Conflict: In times of political instability, civil unrest, or armed conflict, human rights are often disregarded or neglected. Armed forces and non-state actors may perpetrate violence and commit atrocities against civilians, including acts of torture, extrajudicial killings, and mass displacement.
Discrimination and Prejudice: Deep-rooted discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or other characteristics can fuel human rights violations. Marginalized and vulnerable groups are often disproportionately affected by human rights abuses.
Poverty and Inequality: Economic and social inequalities can lead to a lack of access to basic services, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, further exacerbating human rights issues.
Lack of Awareness and Education: Ignorance about human rights and their importance can contribute to violations going unreported or unaddressed. Lack of awareness can also lead to the perpetuation of harmful cultural practices and customs.
Lack of Accountability: A culture of impunity, where perpetrators of human rights violations go unpunished, can encourage further abuses and undermine trust in institutions.
Authoritarian and Repressive Regimes: In countries with repressive governments, human rights are often sacrificed in the pursuit of maintaining power and control.
