WHAT IS HIERARCHY?

In a hierarchical system, there is a clear vertical or hierarchical structure, often represented by levels or tiers. The higher levels of the hierarchy generally possess more authority and control, while the lower levels have less influence and autonomy.

Examples of hierarchical structures include corporate organizations with executives, managers, and employees, governmental systems with officials and citizens, and academic institutions with administrators, faculty, and students.

WHAT IS A HOLARCHY?
A holarchy is a concept that refers to a hierarchical organization or system in which the components or entities are interconnected and mutually dependent, forming a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Unlike a traditional hierarchy, which is often characterized by rigid top-down control and subordination, a holarchy emphasizes the interrelatedness and interdependence of different levels or entities within the system.
The term "holarchy" was coined by Arthur Koestler, a Hungarian-British author and philosopher, to describe a hierarchical organization that incorporates principles of holism. It suggests that each level or entity within the holarchy possesses a degree of autonomy and self-organization while simultaneously being part of a larger whole.
In a holarchy, higher-level entities provide a context, purpose, and coherence to the lower-level entities, while the lower-level entities contribute to the functioning and fulfillment of the higher-level entities.
