What is Magickal Meditation?
The word meditation used to really bug me because the image of sitting cross-legged on the ground with my spine in perfect order just didn’t sit with me (no pun intended).
However, over the years of trying to heal my physical body and its plethora of ailments (skin issues, acne, anxiety, and panic attacks), I knew meditation needed to become a daily practice — I was just unsure how it would look for me.
Today, I want to share with you how I meditate (as a practitioner of magick) in case it’s something you’re not doing regularly, but you know you need to.
But before I get into how I meditate, let’s discuss what meditation is.
What is Meditation?
Meditation is a practice that involves training the mind and cultivating a state of focused attention and awareness. It is often used as a tool for relaxation, stress reduction, spiritual growth and works wonders for healing. Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years in various cultures and spiritual traditions.
In meditation, you typically sit or assume a comfortable position and engage in a specific technique or method to quiet the mind and bring attention to the present moment. There are many different forms of meditation, but they generally share some common elements:
Many meditation practices involve focusing attention on a specific object, such as the breath, a mantra, a sound, or a visualization. This helps to anchor the mind and prevent it from wandering.
Mindfulness meditation involves cultivating a non-judgmental awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and sensations in the present moment. It encourages a state of open observation and acceptance without getting caught up in judgments or reactivity.
Meditation can induce a state of deep relaxation, allowing the body and mind to release tension and stress. This can be particularly beneficial for promoting overall well-being and reducing the negative effects of stress.
Regular meditation practice can help you develop greater emotional awareness and regulation. By observing your thoughts and emotions without attachment or judgment, meditators can learn to respond to challenging situations with greater clarity and equanimity.
It can facilitate a deeper connection with your inner self, higher consciousness, higher faculties and the Divine.
So that sounds great, right?
But why is the practice so daunting for so many — especially people like ME who needed it the most!
I will be perfectly transparent — meditation is something I had to gradually work myself into. I didn’t become a master yogi, but I did figure out a formula that works for me.
Firstly, what almost no one says in the spiritual community when discussing meditation is before you even start a meditation practice, you need to KNOW yourself.
Don’t even both trying to begin a meditation practice if you aren’t familiar with your “quirks.”
Some of my “quirks”are:
- I have a lot of nervous energy
- a VERY active mind
- an overstimulated Imagination.
The idea of sitting still was actually more daunting than the act of sitting still. This was a very valuable observation once I actually got started.
Next, I stopped calling it Meditation.
I know, this seems a little absurd, but I just didn’t like the word: meditation. LOL
I suppose it made me think of man buns and goat yoga, and all the stereotypical things in the spiritual community. I often felt like people bragged about meditation and their yoga practices, which made me want to run to the caves.
How very Pluto in Scorpio of me. ;)
But this was a very important lesson that helped me get into meditation practice — I needed to know WHO I AM.
If I know I don’t resonate with the norm, then I have to find my own way of doing it. (This didn’t just pertain to meditation; I’m like this in ALL aspects of my life.)
That’s why you shouldn’t start meditating until you know who you are — at the very least, what you know you don’t like.
How I Meditate
Before I healed my body of a 25+ year battle with “psoriasis”, I started out with guided meditation. This helped me stay in the moment while my active imagination was guided by the practitioner. I used apps and youtube.
It didn’t take very long before I graduated to Solfeggio Frequency meditations and binaural beats. In fact, the music was SOO intoxicating to me, I used to meditate for 2 hours a day! I just LOVED how it made me feel!
However, I almost never sat in lotus pose or in a prayer position.
For the most part, I did my meditations laying down during the day so I wouldn’t get tired and fall asleep.
In addition, I used to sleep with earbuds at night and listen to 8-hours of Solfeggio Frequencies to help me reprogram my subconscious mind — and I did fall asleep. I HEALED while I was sleeping.
Meditation as a Magickal Practice
Today, my meditation practice is strictly for magickal purposes.
I only sleep to meditation music if I am having a hard time getting to sleep or a difficult time going back to sleep.
When I say I use meditation as a magickal practice, what I mean is I am actually practicing MAGICK.
I don’t meditate, just to “meditate.”
I will go into far greater details about this inside the Inner Temple Magick Academy, but for now, let me share with you how to use meditation as a magickal practice.
I meditate every morning right when I wake and right before I go to bed.
I have very specific things I think about and focus on during my meditation that involves calling in my desires and creating the ideal outcome for my life.
When you’re just getting started with magick, the first meditation you will learn is how to be an observer.
When you spend 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening closing your eyes and observing your thoughts, you learn A LOT about yourself.
As I mentioned in a previous entry, I am WIRED by wealth (ten of pentacles). When I first started observing my thoughts, I realized I was always thinking about ways to make my website better and more user-friendly. I thought about laying out my newsletter, and what keywords would help drive more traffic to my website. LOL
I literally imagined every button, color, blog posts, hyperlink… the whole 9 yards. To most that would seem really boring… but for me, it was absolutely intoxicating.
My thoughts were very organized in this way, which was interesting to observe.
Instead of judging myself for being so “work-oriented” I started to accept myself for being so driven — some might even say, obsessed with the movement I am leading.
But, as an observer during this magickal practice, I started to respect myself in a way I hadn’t before.
I used to judge myself a lot for “being a workaholic,” which made me feel bad about myself. Talk about counter-intuitive.
The idea with this first practice in magickal meditation is to just observe. Once you start to master this magickal practice (meditation), you begin to have a level of self-acceptance.
Self-acceptance is KEY in magick.
You might find in your observations that you waste a lot of time thinking or comparing yourself to others, but instead of judging yourself, allow yourself to better understand WHY you do that. There is a DEEPER reason why you do that and it’s quite possibly a beautiful reason.
You want to be better. You want to see yourself grow. You have aspirations that you want to achieve.
Once you observe, you get to the root of what the thoughts are actually saying. You begin to decode your thoughts and discover their esoteric meaning!
In observation, you get to see a bigger picture.
Through the power of observation, I started to have a deeper respect for meditation as not just a tool that helped me heal my nervous system and my skin issues, but also how to respect myself and stop judging myself.
When you observe, you begin the process of understanding.
Almost everything you do is the result of what’s inside your subconscious mind. When you learn how to observe, you get to see what is currently programmed in your subconscious mind, which gives you insights as to WHY that program exists.
Most of the time I found that it wasn’t the thoughts that were the problem, it was “the judgement of the thought”. Once you learn how to observe without judgement, a little seed gets planted and “meditation” becomes something you want to do because it’s “your time” to focus on YOU and what is your driving force.
How will you know where you’re going if you don’t know what’s driving you?
Your magickal meditation allows you to see inside your subconscious mind and what’s currently “running the show.” When you can stop judging what is running your show, you receive profound insight around WHO YOU ARE.
I know I am “wealth-minded;” I just needed to observe my thoughts long enough to understand what that really meant.
Now that we are getting to know each other more, you already now know that WEALTH=KNOWLEDGE and I’m damn proud to be '“work-oriented.” The more I observe, the more knowledge I attain and the more wealthy I become.
That’s what I call: The Great Work.
